    TOUR GUIDE

As you move around the farm, scan QR codes to learn more about places, things, and activities on the farm.

Welcome to Mykawa Farm! This farm belongs to the students who come to visit. It’s your farm! We hope you do these things today:

    • Stay safe

    • Have fun trying new things

    • Enjoy nature

    • Grow some GOOD FOOD

    • Taste some GOOD FOOD

    • Do activities that help you explore careers in food, agriculture, and natural resources

We have a few rules to keep you safe:

    1. Check your feet. There are many dangerous things on the ground that could bite you or make you fall. Whenever you move to a new spot, check your feet. Check your buddy’s feet too.

    1. Wash your hands before you touch food and after you touch germs.

    1. Stay within three walking seconds of your buddy. Stay within five walking seconds of your adult.

    1. Ask a staff member before you pick a plant or use a tool.

    1. Leave a place better than you found it. This means put things back for the next group and put trash where it goes.

If you need to use the bathroom, tell your adult and take your buddy. Take your buddy TO the bathroom. Don’t take your buddy INSIDE the bathroom. If your buddy is using the bathroom, just wait until they’re done and go back to your adult. MOST IMPORTANTLY...WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER YOU USE THE BATHROOM. WE ARE WORKING WITH FOOD THAT PEOPLE WILL EAT. It’s rule number two! Everyone point to where the bathrooms are.

Part of staying safe is staying hydrated. The water is in the water monster. Point to where it is. If you need water, tell your adult. Maybe they’ll take your whole group over there. Maybe they’ll send you and your buddy. Same rule as with the bathroom. Take your buddy to the water monster. Don’t take your buddy INSIDE the water monster.

Half of you will be EXPLORING; half will be CULTIVATING and then we will switch. Everyone will get to do everything.

CULTIVATING GROUP– You may walk over to the Southfields where you will recieve further instructions.

EXPLORING GROUP– there are clues that can help you learn about the farm, and there are lots of activities for you to try. Many are challenging. Are you ready for challenges?

Adults – you have a very important job. You need to be on your phone today...getting information from these QR codes to tell your students about the farm.

The adults have schedules. If you have questions about where you need to be, ask a staff member.

    ABOUT THE FARM

Mykawa Farm is on 6.5 acres of land. It is named after Shinpei Mykawa, a Japanese immigrant who brought rice farming skills to Houston.

    THE GROW ZONE

The main purpose of Mykawa Farm is to show visitors how food grows, so the Grow Zone spreads across most of the land.

    THE DECOMPOSE ZONE

When living things die, they decompose or break down. Visit the different areas of The Decompose Zone to learn why this process is so important!

    THE BUZZ ZONE

We have some VIPs (Very Important Pollinators) at Mykawa Farm. Visit the Buzz Zone to learn about their hard work.

    THE DESIGN ZONE

There is so much art, architecture, and engineering in agriculture. Explore these careers as you make your own amazing creations!

MORE PLACES TO SEE AND THINGS TO DO

    OLD MYKAWA SCHOOL

Starting in 1919, Mykawa School was here. In 1923, Houston ISD started and added two rooms to the school. In the early 1930s, the students moved to Garden Villas Elementary.

    MEDITATION MAZE

The Meditation Maze is a garden for relaxing and thinking. There are plants for each of your five senses. Don't worry about getting lost. There are no wrong turns. Walk around the maze as many times as you like. If you want to learn more about these kinds of mazes or make your own, research labyrinths. The raised beds in our garden were donated and assembled by Vego Garden, a Houston-based company.

    BAT HOUSES

A scout built these houses to attract bats to the farm. Bats help us in many ways.

    FOREST

HALF of Mykawa Farm is the forest. There are many different plants and animals living there!

    SERVICE YARD AND STORAGE

This area is where we keep tools and materials to keep the farm looking great! Please do not enter this area without a farm staff member. There are some dangers.

    HYDRATION STATION

Drinking water is important! Please bring a refillable water bottle and use the Water Monster when you are thirsty!

    RAINWATER HARVESTING

One way to save water on the farm is to catch or harvest the rain. WE DON'T DRINK THIS WATER, but the plants do. Our rainwater harvesting system has five parts. Can you tell what each part does?

    TOILETS

We put the toilets far from where the crops are grown. Please wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before returning to the grow zones. We want to keep our bathroom germs away from the food people will eat!

Also, a lot of visitors use just a few toilets. If there is a mess, tell a farm staff member, so we can clean!

    HAND WASHING SINKS

Please wash your hands well before working in the growing zones. If you sneeze, wipe your mouth/nose, or touch something with germs on it please exit the growing area immediately and wash your hands again. We are working with food that other people will be eating!

    FIRST AID STATION

If you need help, tell your leader and take a buddy to the first aid station where a staff member will help you.
