    Background

ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) voluntary program that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency.  Under EPA’s leadership, American consumers, businesses, and organizations have made investments in energy efficiency that are transforming the market for efficient products and practices, creating jobs, and stimulating the economy.

    ENERGY STAR and Houston ISD

The Energy and Sustainability Department at HISD uses ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager to track and trend the performance of 250+ K-12 facilities and counting.  Portfolio Manager is used to identify specific campuses that have the greatest potential for improvement as well as top performers in the district.  The goals for the district are to achieve an average ENERGY STAR score of 75 or better for all facilities, and for each campus to earn ENERGY STAR certification at least once.

    Our ENERGY STAR Goals

Our goals for the district are to achieve an average ENERGY STAR score of 75 or better for all facilities; earn ENERGY STAR certification for each campus at least once; and to participate in the Battle of the Buildings Challenge.  The Battle of the Buildings competition is an annual competition hosted by the EPA to help organizations save energy, save water, and fight climate change with help from EPA's ENERGY STAR and WaterSense programs.
