    2024-2025 Oral Reading Categories

    • Elementary (2nd-5th grade): Poetry
    • Middle (6th-8th grade): Prose

    HISD Rule Differences: HISD rules deviate slightly from UIL on what grade levels perform prose and poetry in Oral Reading. At HISD, we have two categories, elementary and middle school. Elementary school students always do poetry and middle school students alternate between poetry and prose on a yearly basis.
