School Health Advisory Council and Committee

  • HISD maintains a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) to ensure that local community values and health issues are reflected in the district's health education instruction. The majority of its members are parents of children enrolled in HISD schools who are not employed by HISD. Members serve three-year terms.

Designated council members, health and physical education specialists, and selected lead teachers are subsequently chosen by the council chairperson to create a School Health Advisory Committee. This committee provides guidance and suggestions to the council, which, in turn, makes recommendations to the Board of Education.

For additional information, please see BDF5 (Regulation; pdf), at the Policy Administration department website.

How to Participate in the School Health Advisory Council

Members of the council are appointed by the HISD Board of Education, while members of the committee are hand-selected by the council chairperson. If you would like to be considered for either the council or the committee, please contact the manager of Health and Physical Education at 713-556-6823.

To be considered for membership, please fill out this application and follow the instructions for submission.

The SHAC Meeting will be held on the first Tuesday of each month.  Here are the 2024-2025 SHAC Meeting Dates.
